Umpqua Bank Commercial Merchant Sales Officer in Mountlake Terrace, Washington

In this role, you will provide in-person and local sales support to current and prospective customers. You will interview customers and analyze business needs, provide product and pricing information, prepare proposals, gather and complete required application and underwriting documentation, communicate underwriting decisions to prospects and internal customers, and respond to referrals and inquiries. You'll act as the liaison between Merchant Services and other departments and branches.


  • Make in-person sales calls to prospects, referrals, and existing customers to evaluate, review, and recommend merchant products and services. Work independently, with little or no supervision and often in remote locations to accomplish assigned individual, departmental, and bank-wide goals.

  • Analyze complex merchant processing scenarios to create customer comparisons. Make decisions regarding pricing, products, or discount rates while maintaining bank profitability and service levels.

  • Maintain a portfolio of the largest volume merchants, requiring direct contact and support, within the territory. Provide high-level support and responses to customer requests.

  • Responsible for completing merchant applications, obtaining appropriate signatures, gathering required underwriting support, and researching supporting documentation on applicants.

  • Prepare sales/referral logs and perform follow up with merchants to ensure quality assurance and customer satisfaction.

  • Maintain sufficient bank product knowledge to recognize cross-sell opportunities and provide referrals to the appropriate bank area.

  • Responsible for conducting frequent meetings or visits with Small Business/Commercial/Corporate/ centers to develop referral sources and procedures to ensure smooth transitions of customer referrals.

  • Assist the Merchant Services department in addressing problem merchants in the field. Sell and rent merchant equipment and supplies as needed.

  • Work on more complex client relationships or work with industry specific clients (i.e. medical or other specialized business vertices)

  • May be responsible for working with large complex customers and companies.

  • Demonstrate compliance with all bank regulations that apply to your position, and keep up to date on regulation changes.

  • Maintain working knowledge of our policies and procedures regarding the Bank Secrecy Act, Regulation CC, Regulation E, Bank Security and other regulations that apply to your position.


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required.

  • 4-9 years of relevant years of relevant merchant services sales experience.

  • Prior banking and/or sales experience and knowledge of commercial products and services required.

  • Extremely strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to analyze customer needs, apply products and services to fit common customer needs.

  • Extremely strong merchant services products and process knowledge as well as an understanding of products and operations required for the set-up and maintenance of merchant services products.

  • Proven and strong ability to develop and execute a sales plan that demonstrates the ability to cultivate internal relationships, grow sales revenue, call on customers and develop sales planning specific to customer needs.

  • Advanced knowledge of merchant services policies, procedures, practices and documentation.

  • Proven record of meeting annual sales targets.
