Position Description:

Set up, adjust, and operate power tube bending machines to form tubing used to fabricate plumbing components used in aircraft fuel, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems. Employment in this position also requires standing, handling, rotation of head/neck, lifting and carrying 10-35 pounds, lifting and carrying less than 10 pounds, pushing/pulling 10-35 pounds, pushing/pulling less than 10 pounds, bending and twisting at the waist, walking, contact with metals, lubricants, exposure to noise, atmospheric conditions and energized sources, and the use of personal safety gear for face/eye, hand/arm, ears and feet. Check machine for missing, loose, or damaged equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Obtain work package from storage rack based on schedule requirements or set up that is on bending machine.

  • Work priority jobs first or those requested by coordinator or supervisor.

  • Ensure that correct material (type, size, heat lot, and quantity) is available and free from visible defects.

  • Prepare to set-up job or run previously set-up job by reviewing work order, tie-in sheets, operator's or setup documents, blueprints, or CATIA plots. Identify type of set-up required.

  • Select and install machine accessories and holding devises (e.g., collet, radius block, pressure die, clamp die, mandrel, mandrel rod, and wiper die, if needed).

  • Verify that apparatus is in good condition.

  • Adjust bending machine by setting centerline, adjusting collet, mandrel rod length, pressure die, wiper die if used, and machine pressure.

  • Check machine set-up and/or parts completed by previous operator to determine progress on a job and ensure safe working conditions, as required.

  • Perform test bend to verify that bends are within tolerance for ovality, angle, and are free from tool marks.

  • Perform 20 degree and 120 degree bends and measure angles of those bends using protractor to check for spring back.

  • Enter measured angles into control panel of bending machine if different than required angle to reset proportional and constant spring back and achieve drawing bend angle. Check tubes using five axis digitizer (Super Gauge) and enter data into tube bending machine to make any needed corrections of bend angles.

  • Set up checking fixtures on mylar pattern to index points and check tubes for correct bends and mark tube ends to be trimmed to correct length.

  • Handle and dispose of hazardous materials (e.g., coolants, solvents, shop towels) in approved manner (per Material Safety Data Sheets and Boeing requirements) using personal protective equipment as required.
